A recent feature in US title Disfunkshion magazine. To have my tale told between those pages allowed me to reflect on what an absolute privilege it is to do what I do for a living. I don’t take it for granted for a single second, and I truly hope this piece can encourage even just one more person to follow their hearts, their dreams, and the road.
We all think about it. Quitting the job that has us chained to our desks, packing up our lives into a backpack and living a nomadic lifestyle. There are few people who decide to make the dream of traveling a reality and Nina Karnikowski from Travels With Nina is one of them.
Nina’s platform is set to inspire her readers to experience new cultures and experiences. Through documenting her travels, she aims to stir a yearning for adventure, curiosity and living in the moment. For those of us who can’t escape the office just yet, following Nina across the globe surely helps feed the wander- lust appetite.
TELL US ABOUT WHEN YOU FIRST BEGAN TRAVELLING.
My passion for travelling began when I lived in France for a year in 2006 as part of my Journalism and International Studies degree. I explored Europe as much as I could that year. Packing my whole life up on my back and moving around the globe felt inspiring. I started working full-time as a magazine features writer, then landed my dream job as an in-house travel writer for one of Australia’s biggest newspapers three years ago. I finally went freelance and started my blog Travels With Nina a year ago. I now have the freedom to go where I want, when I want, and I’ve had some fantastic adventures.
WHAT WERE THE BIGGEST OBSTACLES YOU HAD TO OVERCOME IN ORDER TO FULLY ACTIVATE THIS DREAM?
I have a lot of people tell me that I have the dream job, travelling the world for work. While I adore what I do, the reality is that I’m away from my family and friends a lot of the time. Learning to not get too sad about missing some seminal moments back home was an obstacle I had to overcome.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED IN YOUR TRAVELS?
Some of the best experiences I’ve had while traveling have arisen because I’ve said yes to things that I wouldn’t normally say yes to. This has seen me surfing wild waves in Bali, kayaking down a river full of crocodiles and hippos in Zambia and trek- king up an active volcano in Papua New Guinea. Stay open to everything and you’ll never be disappointed.
FROM WHERE DO YOU PULL INSPIRATION TO FEED YOUR SENSE OF STYLE?
From the colorful and diverse cultures I encounter. Almost every piece in my wardrobe tells a story, and I love wearing clothes that speak to the experiences I’ve had and the places I’ve explored.
TELL US ABOUT AN AWE-INSPIRING MOMENT YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED.
I’ve experienced countless moments of awe as I’ve wandered. There was the moment, just two days ago, when I sat by a roaring fire in a camp in Mongolia, sipping on yak vodka I had distilled with the Nomadic family we were staying with just that morning, listening to them sing folk songs. I get to travel to distant lands, fill myself up with knowledge and inspiration, and then tell stories about what I saw and what I learned. What could be better than that? It’s a true privilege to do the work that I do.
