JAIPUR, INDIA

Jaipur, the gateway to Rajasthan and India’s pink city. It gives me a warm glow just thinking about it. About those early morning wanderings through the ancient forts and palaces, and through the narrow alleyways of the colourful bazaars. There, I watched women preparing for Gangaur festival, when married woman pray to the goddess Parvati for a long, healthy life for their husbands, and unmarried girls for good life partners.

I also spent a special morning walking the streets of the old town with the lovely Vineet of Jaipur Walking Tours, exploring many of the city’s temples and sampling spectacularly fragrant dal and samosas from street food vendors. In between, I bumped around in cycle rickshaws, and rested my weary head at the oasis that is the 175-year-old Samode Haveli, the perfect place to escape the chaos.
